# Does Giving Money Away Make You Happier?

Spending on others is linked to more happiness than spending on yourself. What the research shows, what it doesn't, and how to try it.

# Does Giving Money Away Make You Happier?

By **[Brett Ingram](https://www.optyoumize.com/about)** | Last updated October 16, 2026 | 6 minute read

Often, yes. Research published in *Science* found that people who spent more of their money on others reported greater happiness, while spending more on themselves showed no such link. A later study using Gallup World Poll data from 136 countries found a positive link between spending on others and well-being in 120 of them. The catch: most of this research shows a relationship, and the experiments are small. So giving isn't a guaranteed mood pill. But it's a better bet than most things you can buy yourself for the same five dollars.

## The Simple Answer

Spending on other people tends to make the spender happier, and the amount matters less than you'd think. The Stanford Graduate School of Business summary of the original research puts the idea plainly: how people choose to spend their money is at least as important as how much they make. It doesn't require a trust fund. It requires pointing a little of your money away from yourself on purpose.

## What Did the Original Research Actually Find?

The study most people mean is by Elizabeth Dunn, Lara Aknin and Michael Norton, published in *Science* in 2008. According to the **[Stanford Graduate School of Business write-up](https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/insights/spending-happiness)**, it had three parts:

- **A national survey.** People who spent more on others reported greater happiness, regardless of income. People who spent more on themselves didn't.
- **A workplace bonus study.** Employees at a Boston company were measured before and after profit-sharing bonuses. The size of the bonus didn't predict later happiness. The share spent on others did.
- **A randomized experiment.** Participants were handed money and assigned to spend it on themselves or on someone else. The spend-on-others group felt happier at the end of the day.

I like the bonus study because it flips the usual story. We assume a bigger check makes us happier. Here, the check size didn't do the work. What people did with it did. (Ebenezer Scrooge ran this experiment on himself for decades, and the results were not great.)

## Is It True Outside the United States?

This is the part that surprised me. The **[American Psychological Association's summary](https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2013/02/people-giving)** of a 2013 study by Aknin and colleagues in the *Journal of Personality and Social Psychology* describes survey data from 234,917 people in 136 countries. The link between spending on others and well-being showed up in 120 of them, in every world region, and held after accounting for income, social support, perceived freedom and perceived corruption. Follow-up experiments in Canada, Uganda, India and South Africa pointed the same direction. In one, people given a small sum reported higher well-being after buying a treat for a sick child than after buying one for themselves.

| Study | What happened | What it can and can't tell you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dunn, Aknin & Norton (2008), *Science* | Survey, bonus study and a spend-it-by-5-p.m. experiment all favored spending on others | Strong signal, but a one-day experiment doesn't show lasting change |
| Aknin et al. (2013), Gallup World Poll | Positive link in 120 of 136 countries; 234,917 people | A relationship, not proof giving causes happiness |
| Aknin et al. (2013), experiments | Canada, Uganda, India, South Africa: spending on others raised well-being | Samples were largely university-recruited, so not a perfect picture of each country |

## Does It Have to Be a Big Gift?

No, and the studies suggest it doesn't have to be big at all. In the Stanford summary, lead researcher Dunn suggests even small shifts, as little as $5 spent on another person in a day, may bring a measurable bump in happiness. The summary is careful to describe the day-level effect as "non-trivial," not life-changing, and it doesn't claim the small-dollar version lasts.

That honesty matters. Five dollars of generosity isn't going to cure a bad quarter. But a coffee for a coworker, a book for a friend or a tip a little above normal is cheap enough to try and low-risk enough to repeat.

## Why Might Giving Feel Good?

Researchers sometimes call it a "warm glow." Aknin has suggested the good feeling we get from helping others may have evolved because it nudges people toward generosity that helps groups survive. That's an interpretation, not a tested finding, so hold it loosely. My own observation is simpler: spending on yourself is usually about a thing, and spending on someone else is about a person. Which brings us back to a theme we've covered before. **[Experiences tend to beat things](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/do-experiences-make-you-happier-than-things)**, and shared, connected spending tends to beat solo spending.

## What If Giving Feels Like a Chore, or You're Short on Cash?

Then start small, and don't make it a performance. Norton has said his team worried that people who learned about the findings might spend in a calculated way just to get happy, which could spoil the effect. A follow-up survey of about 1,000 *New York Times* readers who had just learned of the research still found the link. So knowing the trick doesn't seem to ruin it, though it's worth being honest with yourself about the motive. Giving to feel superior and giving because you care about someone are different jobs.

And it doesn't mean you should never spend on yourself. If that's your struggle, **[our post on guilt around spending on yourself](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/why-do-i-feel-guilty-spending-money-on-myself)** is worth a read. The point is balance and a little more intention. If most of your discretionary spending is the shopping-cart sugar rush, **[here's what the research says about retail therapy](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/does-retail-therapy-actually-work-what-the-research-says)**.

## How to Try It: A Simple Two-Week Experiment

1. **Pick a small, real amount.** Five to twenty dollars is plenty. These are the amounts used in the research, not a minimum you need to hit.
2. **Aim it at a person, not a cause in the abstract.** A coffee for a neighbor, a snack for a teammate, lunch for a friend who's had a rough month. Specific beats vague.
3. **Do it a few times over two weeks.** One try is an anecdote. Four is a pattern.
4. **Notice what happens afterward.** Mood that evening? Did the conversation change? Did it feel weird, or good?
5. **Keep what works.** If it does nothing for you, drop it. This is an experiment, not a virtue contest.

If you'd like to give time instead of cash, we looked at that too in **[does volunteering actually make you happier](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/does-volunteering-actually-make-you-happier)**.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does giving money away make you happier?

Often it does. Research in *Science* and a 136-country Gallup survey link spending on others with higher happiness. Most of the evidence shows a relationship rather than proof of cause, but experiments that assigned people to spend on others also found a boost.

### Does it matter how much you give?

Less than you'd expect. In the bonus study, the amount of the bonus didn't predict long-term happiness, but the share spent on others did. Researchers suggest even about $5 spent on someone else in a day may help, though that effect is described as modest.

### Is it better to spend money on others than on yourself?

In these studies, spending on others was linked with more happiness and spending on yourself was not. That doesn't make personal spending bad. It suggests that a bit more generosity may do more for your mood than one more purchase for yourself.

### Does this work in every country?

The link appeared in 120 of 136 countries in Gallup World Poll data, across every world region. The experiments in several countries were mostly university-based samples, so treat "universal" as a strong hint, not a guarantee.

## Where This Leaves You

Your money is a tool, and it's worth asking what you're using it for. Giving a little away, on purpose, to someone specific, is one of the cheapest experiments in this whole field, and the evidence leans in its favor. Try it for two weeks. If you want to think more broadly about how money fits into a life that actually feels good, explore our **[Money & Financial Wellbeing](https://www.optyoumize.com/money-financial-wellbeing)** pillar. My name is Brett Ingram — coach, speaker, podcast host, and award-winning entrepreneur. After 20 years building businesses I came to believe the most important self-improvement question isn't "how do I do more?" but rather "what does a genuinely good life actually look like for me?" We'll explore that question across the seven pillars of a well-lived life: mind, body, purpose, relationships, money, time, and growth.
