## Why Can't I Celebrate My Own Wins?

You can't celebrate your wins because three forces quietly erase them: your baseline resets almost immediately (hedonic adaptation), the one flaw feels louder than the whole success (negativity bias), and the high-achiever reflex moves the goalpost the moment you cross the line. It isn't ingratitude or modesty. In this solo episode, Brett Ingram explains the mechanism and offers a different idea of what a win is for: not another item on the pile, but evidence of who you're becoming.

## What You'll Learn in This Episode

- Why you'd throw a friend a party for what you give yourself a one-word "fine" for
- The hedonic treadmill: why the promotion, the raise, and the new house reset to "normal" so fast
- Why the negativity bias ("Bad Is Stronger Than Good") makes one flaw louder than a 95 percent success
- How the high-achiever identity moves the goalpost before you've taken a breath
- Why "just celebrate your wins" backfires, and the difference between arrogance and acknowledgment
- Achieving versus becoming: why you can't feel a win you only added to the pile
- The arrival fallacy, and the squash champion who felt empty the night he won
- Three questions that let a win land: What did this take? Who did I have to become? What will I let it change?
- The done list: a five-minute weekly practice, plus the progress principle research behind it

## Episode Summary

You did the thing. The big one, the one you'd worked toward for months or years. You crossed the line, and you felt almost nothing: a flicker, a half-second of "huh, okay," and then a quiet voice asking what's next. Brett Ingram opens here because it's so familiar, and because of the double standard underneath it. If a friend pulled off the same thing, you'd have called them and maybe bought them a drink. For yourself, you gave a curt nod and went back to work. His claim is that this has little to do with modesty and everything to do with how you've trained yourself to live.

He starts with what it actually feels like. You keep a detailed mental file of everything wrong, unfinished, or not yet good enough, and it's enormous and always open. Right next to it sits a folder of things you've done well, and it's nearly empty, not because you've done nothing but because nothing makes it in and stays. The achievement lasts about as long as it takes to update the to-do list. Your inner performance reviewer "is great at flagging problems, but gives out exactly zero bonuses." Brett is clear that you're not broken and not an ingrate; this is common among people who've achieved a lot, and there's a mechanism behind it.

He names three forces. The first is hedonic adaptation, the "hedonic treadmill." When something good happens your mood lifts and then drifts back toward where it started. The raise becomes your normal paycheck, and the promotion you wanted for three years becomes, within about a month, simply your job. Researchers debate how complete adaptation is, and big changes can shift a baseline for a long time, but the everyday version, the win that thrills you for an afternoon and vanishes into normal, is well documented. The second is negativity bias, captured in the title of the well-known paper "Bad Is Stronger Than Good." Finish a project that's 95 percent excellent, and your mind goes straight to the other five. Our ancestors who obsessed over threats survived to become us, so the threat detector is excellent at its job and a terrible judge of accomplishments. The third is specific to high achievers: the next goal is already loaded. Hit six figures and that number becomes the floor; run the 10K and suddenly you haven't done a half marathon. The finish line moves before you've caught your breath.

The usual advice, practice gratitude, celebrate your wins, treat yourself, mostly backfires on exactly these people. It turns celebration into one more task, "an item on the to-do list, right between the dentist and the quarterly report," and "a win you have to schedule and perform isn't a win you're feeling, it's a chore wearing a party hat." Brett calls this the softer hustle, the same box-checking machinery pointed at celebration. The modesty script fails too. There's a difference between arrogance, which needs everyone else to see it, and acknowledgment, which is letting yourself see it. Both pieces of advice treat the symptom and never give the win somewhere to land.

The central shift is achieving versus becoming. Achieving is additive: more skills, more credentials, a taller pile, and a taller pile doesn't feel like anything. Becoming is integrative: the win changes your sense of who you are. "You can't feel a win you only added to the pile. You can only feel a win you let change you." Brett illustrates it with a high school cross country memory. The dreaded seven-mile Powder Hollow Loop changed how he thought about getting around before he could drive, because afterward he knew he could run anywhere in town within seven miles. Same effort, but it became a shift in identity, not a data point. He ties this to the show's core idea of [growing toward who you're becoming, not just forward](https://www.optyoumize.com/growth-self-becoming): a maximum-output life where nothing lands means doing all the work and skipping the part that was supposed to make it worth it.

He then tells the story of Tal Ben-Shahar, who trained for years for a national squash championship, expected lasting happiness from winning, and felt it evaporate within hours, leaving the question "is this it?" Ben-Shahar named it the arrival fallacy. Brett separates this from the earlier episode on why reaching goals feels empty: that was about the goal not delivering the feeling, while this is about refusing to let any win register, even meaningful ones.

The practice is three questions, taken slowly over about ninety seconds. What did this actually take? Name the hours, the doubt, and the ninety times you wanted to quit, because "anyone could have done it" is "the single most effective thing your mind says to disqualify your own life." Who did I have to become to do this? The feeling fades; the person you grew into stays. And what am I going to let this change, the goalpost or how I see myself? You can still have a next goal, just don't let it delete this one before you've registered it. Research by Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer on the progress principle backs this up: making progress, and noticing it, was the strongest lifter of people's daily inner work life, and the thing most overlooked. "Noticing your progress isn't soft, it's fuel. You've just been pouring it on the ground."

To make it practical, Brett suggests a done list alongside the to-do list, which he calls "a monument to incompleteness." Each week, write down three things you finished, pick the one that mattered most, run the three questions, then stop for sixty seconds. "That pause is the celebration. It's quieter than confetti, and it lasts a lot longer." He pushes back on himself with three caveats: this isn't resting on your laurels, since burnout comes from a race that never lets you feel you've gotten anywhere; it isn't forced positivity, because the broken five percent still needs fixing; and not every win has to mean something. He closes with David Foster Wallace's two young fish and the older fish asking "how's the water?" and leaves one question: if you let just one win from this past year really land, which would it be?

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Why can't I celebrate my own accomplishments?** Usually it's three forces, not a flaw. Hedonic adaptation resets your baseline quickly, the negativity bias makes one imperfection louder than the whole success, and the high-achiever reflex moves the goalpost the moment you cross it. The fix isn't to celebrate harder; it's to let the win change how you see yourself.

**Why do I feel nothing after reaching a goal?** The moment of crossing the line is tiny, and it can't carry the weight of years of expectation. Tal Ben-Shahar calls this the arrival fallacy: the false belief that reaching a goal delivers lasting happiness. Pinning your worth on the achieving, rather than on who you became, leaves the finish line oversold.

**What is the hedonic treadmill?** It's the tendency for your mood to lift after something good and then drift back toward where it started. The raise becomes your normal paycheck and the promotion becomes just your job. Researchers debate how complete adaptation is, but the everyday version is well documented.

**Why do I immediately move the goalpost after I succeed?** For many high achievers, identity is tied to output, so standing still to savor a win feels risky, like losing your edge. The goalpost moves on its own: hit a number and it becomes the new floor. Noticing it happens is the first step to choosing differently.

**Why does "just celebrate your wins" not work?** It turns celebration into another task on the to-do list, which is the softer hustle: the same box-checking machinery pointed at a new target. It also treats the symptom, never giving the win a place to land inside you.

**What's the difference between achieving and becoming?** Achieving is additive: more skills, credentials, and wins on the pile. Becoming is integrative: the win changes your sense of who you are. You can only feel a win you let change you.

**How do I actually let myself enjoy my wins?** Keep a done list. Each week, write three things you finished, pick the one that mattered most, and ask: What did this take? Who did I have to become? What will I let it change? Then pause for sixty seconds before the next goal. It takes about five minutes.

My name is Brett Ingram — coach, speaker, podcast host, and award-winning entrepreneur. After 20 years building businesses I came to believe the most important self-improvement question isn't "how do I do more?" but rather "what does a genuinely good life actually look like for me?" We'll explore that question across the seven pillars of a well-lived life: mind, body, purpose, relationships, money, time, and growth.
