One bad moment ruins your whole day because of the negativity bias: bad events hit harder and linger longer than good events of the same size, and the brain was built to treat a threat as more urgent than a pleasure. The moment itself is usually over in seconds. What lasts is the spill, the replay and the story you tell about it, and that part is partly up to you. In this solo episode, Brett Ingram explains why "stay positive" and "just let it go" backfire and offers a 60-second practice called right-sizing the ripple.

---

## What You'll Learn in This Episode

- Why a bad moment and a bad day are two different things, and why the spill, not the event, is what ruins the day
- The negativity bias: why "Bad Is Stronger Than Good," and why a criticism outweighs a compliment
- Negativity dominance: why one drop of sewage ruins a barrel of wine but one drop of wine doesn't fix a barrel of sewage
- Why your threat system was built for lions but keeps getting aimed at emails, and why that makes the intensity miscalibrated, not meaningful
- Why "stay positive" and "just let it go" fail, and why suppressing a feeling tends to make it louder
- Right-sizing the ripple: let the wave move, draw the line between a today problem and a life problem, and reweigh the ledger
- The peak-end rule, and how a small, deliberate good ending changes how the whole day is remembered
- Two guardrails: when a bad moment should reshape your day, and when a daily ripple means you should look at the pond

## Episode Summary

It's 8:47 in the morning, the day is barely open, and one email, three sentences, a little too curt, has just sat down in the middle of your chest. You tell yourself it's nothing, and you're right. And yet at four in the afternoon, that small moment is still running in the background like a program you can't close. Brett Ingram builds the episode around a question that is stranger and more useful than "how do I stop bad things from happening": why does one small bad moment get to colonize nine good hours, and can you stop handing it your entire day?

He starts by naming the problem precisely. It is almost never the size of the moment. It is the disproportion: a thirty-second thing gets a nine-hour sentence, ten good things happen and one bad thing happens, and by evening your mind has quietly decided the day was bad. The maddening part is that you can see it happening and it still sits there. Brett's point is that this isn't weakness or drama. Everyone with a working nervous system does it, and the more sensitive and conscientious you are, the more it happens, because you care and you notice. He shares his own version from years of selling custom-configured PCs: one bad review among a hundred happy customers would eat at him.

The explanation is the negativity bias, one of the best-supported findings in psychology. In 2001, a team led by Roy Baumeister published a review titled "Bad Is Stronger Than Good," concluding that across relationships, money, learning, and first impressions, bad events hit harder and linger longer than good events of the same size. In the same year, Paul Rozin and Edward Royzman described negativity dominance: mix something bad with something good and it doesn't average out, it tilts negative. One drop of sewage in a barrel of wine ruins the wine, while one drop of wine in a barrel of sewage is still sewage. Evolution explains the wiring: overreacting to a rustle in the grass costs a little embarrassment, underreacting costs everything, so we descend from the anxious ones. The bias isn't broken. It's ancient, built for lions and now pointed at emails.

Then Brett pushes back on the standard advice. "Stay positive" asks you to win a fight against your own nervous system with willpower, which he compares to turning up the radio to drown out a smoke detector. "Just let it go" is worse, he says, because it is a destination described as if it were a route. Both treat the feeling as the enemy, but the reaction fired before you had a vote, and fighting it is a second battle on top of the first.

His reframe is the heart of the episode: a bad moment and a bad day are two different things. The event is what happened, it has a real size, and it is already over. The spill is everything after, the replay, the story about what it means, the snapping at someone who had nothing to do with it. You didn't choose the first wave, but the spill is the part that is at least partly yours. Like a knocked-over glass, the spill isn't the glass, it's how far the water travels while you stand there. In *Inside Out*, one sad memory bleeds its color through a happy one, and the film's wisdom is not to get rid of the sadness but to give it its real place.

To make that usable, he offers a three-move practice called right-sizing the ripple. First, let the wave move, then name the actual size: take the roughly ninety seconds Jill Bolte Taylor describes for the raw surge to pass (a figure Brett is careful to call her observation, not a hard laboratory number), then say what happened in one sentence with no forecast. "She was curt with me" is an event. "She was curt because I'm bad at my job and it's all falling apart" is a story wearing the event's clothes. Second, draw the line by asking out loud, is this a today problem or a life problem? A life problem genuinely changes your direction and has earned the right to reshape your day. Most bad moments are today problems, and they get this hour, not the drive home, not dinner. A physical marker, like washing your hands or walking through a doorway, helps the brain take the boundary seriously. Third, reweigh the ledger on purpose. Your mind is overcounting the bad moment, so do accurate accounting: one bad exchange happened, and also three things went fine. Because of Daniel Kahneman's peak-end rule, we remember experiences by their most intense moment and how they ended, so give the day a small, deliberate good ending. The content matters less than the placement. It has to be last.

Brett closes with two guardrails. Right-sizing the ripple is not for silencing pain that is trying to tell you something: grief and crossed boundaries should reshape your day. And if every single day contains a day-wrecking moment, stop managing the ripple and go look at the pond, because that may be data about a job, relationship, or environment you should change. The hopeful note comes from the impact bias, found by Dan Gilbert and Tim Wilson: we reliably overestimate how long a bad moment will hold us. As Brett puts it, "The bad moment doesn't get to be the headline unless you let it write the ending." ## Frequently Asked Questions

**Why does one bad moment ruin my whole day?** Because of the negativity bias. Bad events hit harder and linger longer than good events of the same size, and when bad and good mix, the result tilts negative. The moment is usually short. What stretches it across the day is the spill: the replay, the story about what it means, and how it leaks into the next thing.

**Is it normal to focus on one negative thing more than all the good things?** Yes. Everyone with a working nervous system does it, and it's more pronounced in sensitive, conscientious people. Researchers call it the negativity bias, and psychologists Baumeister and colleagues summarized it as "Bad Is Stronger Than Good." It isn't a character flaw. It's an ancient threat-detection system aimed at modern, low-stakes events.

**Why doesn't "just let it go" work?** Because it describes a destination, not a route. The reaction already fired before you had a vote, so telling yourself to drop it adds a second battle on top of the first. Suppressing a feeling also tends to make it louder. It works better to let the first wave move through, then name what actually happened in one sentence.

**What is right-sizing the ripple?** It's Brett Ingram's 60-second practice for keeping a bad moment its actual size. Let the first wave of feeling move without narrating it, state what happened in one sentence with no prediction, ask whether it's a today problem or a life problem, draw a physical line around it, and reweigh the day accurately. Then give the day a small good ending.

**How do I tell a today problem from a life problem?** A life problem genuinely changes your direction, such as a real diagnosis, a relationship truly ending, or a boundary someone crossed that you have to deal with. A today problem belongs to this hour or afternoon and is done after that. Ask the question out loud. Most of the time, the honest answer is today.

**How long does a bad mood actually last?** Less than you predict. Dan Gilbert and Tim Wilson's research on the impact bias shows we consistently overestimate how long a bad moment will affect us. Jill Bolte Taylor describes the raw chemical surge of an emotion passing in roughly ninety seconds, though that is her observation, not a fixed laboratory number, and some stress chemistry lingers longer.

**When is a bad day a sign something bigger is wrong?** When it happens every day. Containment is for the normal friction of being alive. If a job, relationship, or environment reliably produces a day-wrecking moment daily, the problem is the source, not the spill, and the practice is best used to help you see the pattern clearly.

My name is Brett Ingram — coach, speaker, podcast host, and award-winning entrepreneur. After 20 years building businesses I came to believe the most important self-improvement question isn't "how do I do more?" but rather "what does a genuinely good life actually look like for me?" We'll explore that question across the seven pillars of a well-lived life: mind, body, purpose, relationships, money, time, and growth.
