# Why Don't I Feel Wonder Anymore?

Why don't I feel wonder anymore? The flatness isn't jadedness. It's habituation plus an over-optimized life. Here's how to let awe back in.

You don't feel wonder anymore mostly because of two things working together: your brain habituates, paying less attention to anything familiar, and a busy, optimized life trains you to treat every moment as useful, which crowds out awe. Awe requires meeting something you can't control or use. Wonder isn't gone. Your attention got reallocated. In this solo episode, Brett Ingram explains the science of awe and offers one light practice for letting it back in: look as if you'll never see this again.

## What You'll Learn in This Episode

- Why life can feel flat even when nothing is wrong, and why that isn't a verdict on your life or a sign you've gotten jaded
- What awe actually is, according to psychologist Dacher Keltner, and why people feel it two to three times a week on average
- Why the most common source of awe around the world is other people being quietly, remarkably good (moral beauty), not nature
- Habituation: why your brain files the familiar under "handled" and stops looking, and why that's a feature that went too far
- Why an optimized life is almost designed to kill wonder, and how turning a walk into steps or a vacation into an itinerary evicts it
- What awe does for you: a stretched sense of time, less impatience, and a quieter, self-focused inner voice
- The awe walk study: why a fifteen-minute weekly walk with one instruction produced more joy, more compassion, and a smaller self in the selfies
- "Look as if you'll never see this again": a practice that defeats habituation without adding anything to your to-do list
- An honest limit: why wonder is a nutrient, not a treatment, and when flatness deserves real support

## Episode Summary

When was the last time something genuinely stopped you? Not impressed you, but actually stopped you, so that for a second or two you forgot to be yourself. Brett Ingram opens with that question because most of us can remember being moved like that and can't remember the last time it happened. Many of us have quietly agreed that wonder belongs to childhood, vacations, or people with more time, and that the flatness we feel, where the days are fine but nothing really lands, is just what being a competent adult feels like. Brett's case is that the flatness is real, but it isn't a verdict on your life.

He describes it precisely: standing somewhere beautiful while part of you is already thinking about the drive home, a pane of glass between you and the moment, a life that works but runs slightly on mute. It happens in front of the Grand Canyon, a cathedral, or a newborn baby, while the brain quietly runs errands. It is extremely common, and it is not a character flaw.

The feeling has a name. Psychologist Dacher Keltner of UC Berkeley defines awe as the emotion we feel in response to vast and mysterious things we don't understand, and "mysterious" is the word that matters: something you can't fully file away, explain, or control. We assume awe is rare, like a sunrise from the top of Haleakalā, which Brett climbed. But Keltner found people feel awe about two to three times a week, and when his team collected awe stories from twenty-six countries, the most common source wasn't nature. It was other people, what he calls moral beauty: courage, kindness, strength, someone overcoming something hard. The most reliable doorway to wonder is a person being quietly, remarkably good.

So why does life go flat? Brett gives two reasons. The first is habituation: your brain lights up the first time it meets something, and by the fortieth time it files the thing under "handled." You couldn't function if everything stayed vivid, but your brain becomes a roommate who stops noticing the dishes, and the flatness is "efficiency that just went too far." The second is the distinctly optYOUmize idea: a life optimized for control, utility, and measurement asks of every moment, what is this for? Awe requires the opposite. It only appears when you meet something you can't control, use, or reduce to a line item. "We didn't lose wonder by being lazy," Brett says. "We lost it by being relentlessly useful." The instinct that turns a walk into steps and a vacation into an itinerary is the same one that evicts wonder.

Awe is closer to a nutrient than a dessert. Melanie Rudd, Kathleen Vohs, and Jennifer Aaker found that people led to feel awe reported more available time, less impatience, more willingness to help others, and higher life satisfaction in the moment. Awe also produces the small self: the self-focused voice of worry, comparison, and rumination gets quieter, not by numbing you but by expanding the world. In an awe walk study, older adults took a fifteen-minute weekly walk for eight weeks. The group told to look for what amazes them reported more joy and compassion and less daily distress, and their selfies showed them making themselves smaller in the frame. Smaller self, bigger world, bigger smile.

Brett refuses to turn wonder into a productivity project, since "experience three units of awe daily" is "optimization wearing a nicer coat." His practice is one reorientation: once this week, go somewhere ordinary and look as if you'll never see this again. It defeats habituation directly, because the brain pays full attention to what it might lose, and you aren't faking novelty but restoring accuracy. It's the most alive you can make an ordinary Tuesday. Two more doorways are a slow walk without your phone, and going toward moral beauty on purpose, like the Olympic sprinter who pulled up injured on the track and the father who came out of the stands to help him hobble across the finish line.

He ties it together with Pixar's *Soul*, where meaning was in a slice of pizza all along, and the fable *Acres of Diamonds*, where a man searches the world for a fortune that was in his own backyard. He is honest about the limit: this is not a fix for depletion, grief, or depression, and heavy, persistent flatness deserves real support. He closes with the Overview Effect astronauts describe, "same effect, much shorter commute," and Rachel Carson's wish for a sense of wonder so indestructible it lasts throughout life. It was never a childhood ration. It's a muscle, and muscles come back. ## Frequently Asked Questions

**Why don't I feel wonder or awe anymore?** Usually because of two things working together. Your brain habituates, paying less attention to anything familiar to save energy, and a busy, optimized life trains you to treat every moment as something to get through or get something from. Awe requires meeting something you can't control or use, which an efficiency-driven life leaves little room for. Wonder isn't gone. Your attention got reallocated.

**What is awe, and how often do people feel it?** Psychologist Dacher Keltner defines awe as the emotion we feel in response to vast and mysterious things we don't understand. His research found people feel it about two to three times a week on average. It isn't reserved for mountaintops. A stranger's kindness, light through trees, a piece of music, or a child saying something startlingly wise can all qualify.

**Why does life feel flat even when nothing is wrong?** Habituation. Your nervous system pays full attention the first time it meets something and less each time after, until it files the thing under "handled." You couldn't function if everything stayed vivid, but the flatness is efficiency that went too far, not a sign your life got smaller or that you've become jaded.

**How can I feel more awe in everyday life?** Once this week, go somewhere ordinary and look as if you'll never see it again, whether it's your block, your regular drive, or your kitchen when the light comes in. You can also take a slow walk without your phone and let things be bigger than you, or watch deliberately for people being good. None of it adds a task to your life.

**What is moral beauty?** It's Keltner's term for the awe we feel in response to other people's courage, kindness, strength, or overcoming something hard. In his research with people in twenty-six countries, it was the most common source of awe worldwide. It means one of the most available doorways to wonder is the next person you watch being quietly, remarkably good.

**Does awe actually do anything for you?** Research suggests it does. In studies by Rudd, Vohs, and Aaker, people who felt awe reported more available time, less impatience, more willingness to help others, and higher momentary life satisfaction. Awe also quiets the self-focused inner voice. The awe walk study found more joy and compassion during walks and less daily distress. The effects are real but modest, so think of awe as a nutrient, not a cure.

**When is flatness a sign of something more serious?** When it is heavy and persistent, steals your sleep or appetite, or pulls you away from people. That kind of flatness can point to depletion, grief, or depression, and it deserves real support, not just a nicer walk. Awe practices are for the everyday kind of flatness that comes from habituation and busyness.

My name is Brett Ingram — coach, speaker, podcast host, and award-winning entrepreneur. After 20 years building businesses I came to believe the most important self-improvement question isn't "how do I do more?" but rather "what does a genuinely good life actually look like for me?" We'll explore that question across the seven pillars of a well-lived life: mind, body, purpose, relationships, money, time, and growth.
