# What Is Boreout, and Why Is Being Bored at Work So Exhausting?

Being bored at work isn't laziness - it's a documented stress response called boreout. Here's what causes it, how it differs from burnout, and what helps.

# What Is Boreout, and Why Is Being Bored at Work So Exhausting?

By **[Brett Ingram](https://www.optyoumize.com/about)** | Last updated September 9, 2026 | 8-9 minute read

Short answer: yes, it's real, it has a clinical-sounding name, and it is not a character flaw. Boreout is the exhaustion that comes from a job that consistently asks too little of you - not enough challenge, not enough meaning, not enough to fill the hours you're being paid to fill. It gets far less attention than burnout, partly because it sounds like the kind of problem you're supposed to be grateful for. But researchers who've studied it find it correlates with the same misery markers as burnout - depression, low self-esteem, a creeping sense of helplessness - even though the cause is the opposite. Too little, not too much.

## The Simple Answer

Boreout is chronic understimulation at work - not enough meaningful workload, challenge, or sense of purpose - and it produces real psychological strain even though it looks, from the outside, like an easy job. It's different from burnout, which comes from too much demand for too long. Boreout comes from too little, stretched across too much time.

## Where Does the Term "Boreout" Actually Come From?

The word was coined in 2007 by Swiss business consultants Philippe Rothlin and Peter Werder in their book on the subject, which argued that a meaningful share of the modern workforce wasn't overworked at all - it was underworked, understimulated, and quietly miserable about it. They described boreout as having three ingredients: boredom, a lack of challenge, and a lack of genuine interest in the work itself. Later researchers, including organizational psychologist Ruth Stock-Homburg, reframed it slightly as three overlapping crises - job boredom, a crisis of meaning, and a crisis of growth - all stemming from the same root: not enough real challenge to grow into.

For years this stayed mostly theoretical - a compelling idea without much data behind it. That changed with a **[2021 study published in Frontiers in Psychology](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8343021/)**, in which researchers built and validated the first scientific scale for measuring bore-out at work. They surveyed 507 French-speaking workers and found the experience reliably broke down into four distinct dimensions: insufficient workload, under-stimulation, work-related guilt, and a mismatch between the work and the person's own values. That third one - guilt - is worth sitting with for a second, because it's the piece that keeps people from naming the problem out loud. The same study cited earlier national research finding that 41.1 percent of more than 23,000 French workers surveyed in 2016 reported experiencing boredom at work. This isn't a fringe complaint. It's closer to a workplace norm that nobody has a comfortable way to talk about.

### Boreout vs. Burnout: How They're Different

|   | Burnout | Boreout |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Root cause** | Chronic overload - too much demand, for too long | Chronic understimulation - too little challenge or meaning |
| **What it looks like** | Working late, always "on," visibly stretched thin | Stretching two hours of work across a full day, appearing busy |
| **Shared symptoms** | Fatigue, low mood, depression, insomnia, difficulty concentrating | |
| **Emotional undertone** | Resentment, dread of more being asked | Guilt, restlessness, a sense of wasted time |
| **Social permission to complain** | High - widely recognized and sympathized with | Low - often dismissed as "a good problem to have" |

## Why Would Having Too Little to Do Feel Bad?

**The Deeper Answer:** people don't actually want an absence of demands - they want demands that are matched to their capability and that feel like they add up to something. A job that under-uses you doesn't free up mental space; it just relocates the effort. Instead of spending energy on real work, you spend it managing the appearance of work: stretching a two-hour task across a full day, looking occupied in meetings, timing your one genuine task to avoid a day with visibly nothing to do. That performance is its own kind of labor, and it's a uniquely draining kind, because it produces nothing you can point to at the end of it.

There's also a broader signal worth noting here. **[Gallup's ongoing State of the Global Workplace research](https://www.gallup.com/workplace/349484/state-of-the-global-workplace.aspx)** put global employee engagement at just 20 percent in 2025 - its lowest point since 2020. Disengagement gets talked about constantly, almost always through the lens of burnout or bad management. Boreout research suggests part of that number is something quieter: people who aren't overwhelmed, just under-used, and who've stopped expecting their work to ask much of them.

## A Familiar Scene

Anyone who's watched *Office Space* has seen boreout dramatized before it had a name - the stapler nobody needs, the TPS report cover sheet nobody reads, an entire office of people performing productivity for its own sake. It's a comedy because it's recognizable, not because it's exaggerated. I've had stretches of work like that myself - a role where the actual tasks took a fraction of the day, and the real job became managing how that looked. It's a strange kind of tired. You come home having done almost nothing, and you're still wiped out, because holding back and pretending takes its own kind of energy.

## What Actually Helps

**Name it honestly, at least to yourself.** The guilt dimension of boreout is real, and it keeps people quiet about a problem that's worth solving. Being under-challenged at work is not the same as being lucky. It's a legitimate mismatch between what a job asks of you and what you're capable of contributing.

**Look for room to redesign the job you already have.** Long before "boreout" had a name, organizational researchers Amy Wrzesniewski and Jane Dutton were studying something they called **[job crafting](https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/Job-Crafting-and-Meaningful-Work1.pdf)** at the University of Michigan's Center for Positive Organizations - the idea that employees can reshape the tasks, relationships, and framing of a job to make it more challenging and meaningful, without needing a formal title change to do it. If boreout is the diagnosis, job crafting is close to the prescription. We've written a full walkthrough of how to actually do this in **[what job crafting is and how to start](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/what-is-job-crafting-and-how-to-do-it)**, and it's worth reading in full if this post is landing uncomfortably close to home.

**Ask for more before you assume there isn't any.** A surprising number of under-challenged employees never actually ask a manager for harder work, because it feels like an odd request. It isn't. Most managers would rather hear "I have capacity for more" than watch someone quietly disengage over months.

**Check whether the mismatch is the role or the growth stage.** Sometimes boreout isn't really about the job - it's a signal that you've outgrown it and it's time to move, not redesign. If that's the more honest read, our piece on **[feeling behind in your career](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/why-do-you-feel-behind-in-your-career)** covers how to tell the difference between restlessness worth acting on and restlessness worth sitting with.

**Rule out the bigger picture.** Boreout is specific to work, but the flatness it produces can bleed into everything else if it goes unaddressed long enough - which starts to look a lot like **[languishing](https://www.optyoumize.com/blog/what-is-languishing-and-why-do-i-feel-blah)**, the broader sense of just going through the motions. If the blah feeling extends well past your job description, it's worth treating as its own thing rather than assuming work is the whole story.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is boreout a real, recognized diagnosis?

It's not a formal clinical diagnosis in the way depression or an anxiety disorder is, but it is a documented, researched phenomenon with a validated measurement scale. A 2021 study in Frontiers in Psychology built and tested a scale specifically for measuring bore-out at work, based on responses from over 500 workers, and found it correlates with real markers of psychological strain.

### What's the actual difference between boreout and burnout?

Burnout comes from chronic overload - too much demand for too long. Boreout comes from the opposite: chronic understimulation, not enough meaningful challenge to fill the time or engage your ability. Both can produce similar symptoms, including fatigue, low mood, and trouble concentrating, but the underlying cause and the fix are different.

### Can you be busy all day and still be experiencing boreout?

Yes. Boreout is often about a lack of meaningful or challenging work, not literally having nothing to do. Someone can spend a full day on low-value, repetitive, or make-work tasks and still experience the guilt, restlessness, and quiet exhaustion that researchers link to boreout, because the issue is engagement and challenge, not raw hours filled.

### Can job crafting actually fix boreout?

For many people, yes, at least partially. Job crafting research from the University of Michigan's Center for Positive Organizations shows that reshaping the tasks, relationships, or personal meaning within an existing role can measurably increase engagement and satisfaction, even without a formal job change. It won't fix a role that's fundamentally the wrong fit, but it's a reasonable first step before assuming the only option is to leave.

## Where This Leaves You

If you've spent the last few months feeling tired in a way that doesn't match how little you're actually doing, that's worth taking seriously rather than feeling guilty about. Boreout isn't a luxury problem, and it isn't evidence that you're ungrateful - it's a legitimate mismatch between what you're capable of and what your work is currently asking of you. Whether the answer is redesigning the role you have or eventually finding one that fits better, it starts with the same honest admission: being underused is its own kind of hard. That's really what **[purpose and meaningful work](https://www.optyoumize.com/purpose-meaningful-work)** is about as a pillar here - not chasing constant challenge for its own sake, but making sure the work you spend most of your waking hours on actually asks something real of you.

After 20 years building businesses I came to believe the most important self-improvement question isn't "how do I do more?" but rather "what does a genuinely good life actually look like for me?" We'll explore that question across the seven pillars of a well-lived life: mind, body, purpose, relationships, money, time, and growth.
