Welcome to Optimize! I'm Brett Ingram, entrepreneur and award-winning product creator. The big question is: how are entrepreneurs like us—who have too much to do in too little time—able to build both the business and the life of our dreams? That's what we explore on this podcast.
Every day is a new opportunity. We can either let things happen to us, or we can set ourselves up for success by purposefully following a morning routine for productivity that makes us feel unstoppable.
It's easy to roll from one day to the next—go to bed, wake up, and let the day unfold however it will. But if we take deliberate steps and do the right things in the right way, we can put ourselves in the best possible state to start each day.
I've experienced both types of days, and I much prefer waking up feeling great, knowing I'm going to crush the day and start feeling unstoppable. When we get to the end of a productive day, we can look back, feel really good about what we accomplished, and that energizes us for the next day. The same cycle repeats itself—either positively or negatively.
When we're in the zone and making things happen, we not only feel great during the day, but we also feel optimistic about what's to come. We build confidence and develop muscle memory in our minds about our ability to have great days consistently.
Unfortunately, lackluster days can spill over into dread or anxiety about tomorrow. When we aren't as productive as we need to be and let opportunities slip by, negativity creeps in. By bedtime, we're not looking forward to the next day—we're actually dreading it.
The key difference? When we let things happen to us, that's never as powerful or productive as putting our own stamp on what we want to do. We're the ones in control of exactly how we feel and how we operate.

Developing an energizing morning routine takes effort and sacrifice, but once we get used to it, we unlock our full potential. It's a habit like anything else—the more we do it with consistency, the more it becomes part of who we are, the less we have to think about it, and the more automatic our results become.
It's important to note that any of these habits will be helpful. You don't have to do the entire list to see benefits. Start with one or two, get those ingrained in your schedule, and add others as you can. Do them in any order that works for you.
1. Wake Up Early
Set a consistent wake-up time that gives you time before work, before running your business, or before your responsibilities begin. Depending on your schedule, this might mean waking up at 5:00 or 6:00 AM.
The benefit: This gives you clarity, focus, downtime, and the ability to catch your breath, frame everything you want for the day, get motivated, and jumpstart your day before it even really begins.
2. Hydrate and Refresh
One of the biggest culprits of lack of energy is actually dehydration. Throughout a normal day, we lose hydration, and if we aren't constantly drinking, we become dehydrated—which is mentally and physically fatiguing.
Action steps:
Start your day by drinking a glass of water
Fill up a bottle of ice water and keep it with you throughout the day
Consider a cool or lukewarm shower to invigorate your senses (hot showers can actually make you tired, especially in summer)
When you cool down at the end of your shower, you'll feel ready to rock and roll.
3. Practice Meditation or Mindfulness
I'm not talking about a 30-minute retreat. Just 5-10 minutes of meditation or mindfulness practice can clear your mind, reduce stress, and help you focus on what you need to do.
Ways to practice:
Visualize your schedule and how effective you'll be
Mentally organize your tasks for the day
Be in the moment and appreciate nature
Express gratitude for things in your life
This sets you off on the right mental tone for the rest of the day. You can also engage in this throughout the day—take a 5-10 minute break after a stressful meeting or when dealing with challenges to reconnect and get centered.
Pro tip: The first couple of times feel a little wonky if you're not used to it, but as you continue, your mind quiets more and more, and you become comfortable in a state of quiet rather than always having your mind running a million miles an hour.

4. Exercise
This may be a bigger challenge in the morning, but I find it's the best time if possible. Even 20-30 minutes of physical activity throughout the day—even during lunch—is invaluable.
Why exercise matters for entrepreneurs:
Keeps you physically healthy
Creates a mind-body connection that enhances mental performance
Keeps you at full capacity so you're not breaking down physically
Boosts overall energy levels throughout the entire day
Releases endorphins that enhance mood
Improves long-term health
The fascinating truth about exercise: When you first start, it's exhausting. But after a week or two, your overall energy level rises throughout the entire day. It becomes constant—you'll have better energy all day long.
Choose what you'll actually do: Pick an activity you'll commit to and continue doing. For me, I prefer weights and gym workouts. I don't like cardio, so if that was my morning routine, I'd find excuses not to do it. Find what works for you—something you won't make excuses to avoid.
The morning is best, but the most important thing is that you do it at some point during the day. Lunchtime is also excellent because it reinvigorates you when you start to fatigue after a hard morning.
5. Eat a Healthy Breakfast
It's easy to grab a donut or muffin—something fast just to have eaten something. But there are many things you can make that are very easy:
Quick healthy options:
Fresh fruit (bananas, apples, oranges—just peel and eat)
Yogurt (flip open and eat)
Instant oatmeal (add hot water, ready in 3-4 minutes)
Scrambled eggs (if you have time)
Stock these items in your refrigerator and cupboard so you're more likely to use them. When you don't have anything available, that's when you grab the fast food—and while it gives you a quick sugar high, it ultimately makes you feel dragged down, heavy, and fatigued.
Choose foods that provide sustained energy:
Carbohydrates and protein
Eggs and avocados
Oatmeal
Fresh fruit
Smoothies
The fascinating phenomenon: If you eat a healthy breakfast for productivity, you're far more likely to stay healthy throughout the day. Once you fall off the wagon in the morning with a donut, you figure you might as well grab a burger for lunch—the day is already shot. But if you eat healthy in the morning, it's easier to maintain a healthier diet all day. This becomes a self-reinforcing habit.
6. Set Daily Goals
Take 10-15 minutes to review your tasks for the day and prioritize based on importance and urgency.
Goal-setting strategy:
Focus on what really has to get done—the most important tasks
Identify the levers that move your business forward
Tackle highest impact, least desirable tasks first
Know your top 3-5 priorities each day
When you knock out what you least want to do first, you set yourself up with positive expectations for the rest of the day. You've already completed the important thing you didn't want to do—now you have everything else to look forward to.
If you save difficult tasks for last, your energy lags and you'll push it off until tomorrow. That's where you get into trouble.
Setting clear goals helps you stay focused and motivated, ensuring you're not just getting dragged around trying to figure out where to go next.

7. Learn or Read
Spend 15-30 minutes every day reading a book, listening to a podcast like this one, or watching educational videos.
Why this matters:
Stimulates your mind
Provides new ideas and insights relevant to your work and personal growth
Is an enriching investment in yourself
Makes you feel better about who you are and your future prospects
Boosts optimism
Creates new information, avenues, ideas, and opportunities
Expands your frame of reference
When you invest in learning, you grow as a person. This makes you better at what you do and better as who you are.
8. Plan Breaks and Rewards
This is really important and something many entrepreneur morning habits guides overlook. We often feel the reward will come at the end—we'll work until our business is where we want it to be, then sit back on the beach sipping mai tais.
The reality: We need times to unplug and recharge. We need to recognize and celebrate our wins and feel good about what we're doing. Nobody can work constantly under pressure, feeling underappreciated and like they'll never get where they want to be. It's not good mentally or physically.
How to implement breaks and rewards:
Take a 5-minute break every hour
Take 10-15 minutes after completing two hours of work
Reward yourself after completing three tasks
Use breaks to: stretch, get coffee, listen to your favorite song, talk to a colleague, make a phone call, scroll social media, read an article, play a quick game
Important: Plan them, schedule them, and commit to doing them—even if there isn't anything specific to do during that time. Take it anyway as your own reward and recognition.
9. Review and Visualize
Take a moment to visualize your day's success. Think back across all the positive things you've done over yesterday, the last week, or month. Then imagine going forward, completing all your tasks efficiently and having a productive day today.
This boosts your confidence and motivation because you already feel positively about what's to come. That's a much more powerful way to start a day than dreading everything you have to do.
10. Prepare the Night Before
I'm a huge advocate of this. Make your morning routine smooth by preparing as much as you can the night before. This also allows for any unforeseen situations.
Example scenario: Maybe you've carved out an hour in the morning to plan your day and prioritize tasks. Then you get woken up an hour earlier by your sick child or vomiting pet. There goes all your prep time. Now you're thrust into the day with no plan, flying blind, feeling anxious, frustrated, and stressed.
Solution: Prep the night before when it's quiet and there's more time. Decide:
What outfit you'll wear
What breakfast you'll eat
What your priorities are
Get everything ready to go
Even if something unexpected happens, you're okay. You can sustain that disruption and still have an awesome day.

Creating Real Transformation Through Consistency
By adding these to our daily habits—or replacing negative habits with them—we can develop the habit of feeling great and being productive. If it's too much at first, start with just a couple and add more as you go.
The most important part is consistency. Do these things until they become habits and part of who you are. That's how you create real transformation.
Final Thoughts: Take Control of Your Days
The days will roll on in our lives whether we like it or not. We can just ride the waves up and down, hoping for more good days than bad. Or we can make the conscious decision to build the habit of feeling powerful, productive, and cultivating an unstoppable mindset.
Any new skill or habit takes time, dedication, and consistency to develop. But it gets easier and easier to maintain once you get it going. The hardest part is starting.
Let's make a commitment to ourselves to live our best lives. Let's be the drivers of our own experience by starting the day with a routine that lifts us up, empowers us, and reminds us what we're capable of.

The best morning routine for productivity includes waking up early, hydrating immediately, practicing 5-10 minutes of meditation, exercising for 20-30 minutes, eating a healthy breakfast, and setting clear daily goals. The key is consistency—start with 1-2 habits and build from there. Visit our productivity resources for more actionable strategies.
Building sustainable entrepreneur morning habits typically takes 2-4 weeks of consistent practice before they become automatic. Start small with just one or two habits, practice them daily, and gradually add more elements. The hardest part is starting—but once you build momentum, maintaining the routine becomes easier and the results compound over time.
For maximum energy and focus, entrepreneurs should choose a healthy breakfast for productivity that includes protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Quick options include oatmeal, eggs, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, avocado toast, or smoothies. Avoid sugary pastries and fast food that cause energy crashes. Eating healthy in the morning makes it easier to maintain good eating habits throughout the day.
Staying motivated with your daily success habits requires three key strategies: (1) Start with habits you actually enjoy or find valuable, (2) Track your progress and celebrate small wins, and (3) Prepare everything the night before to remove morning friction. Remember that motivation follows action—you don't need to feel motivated to start, you need to start to feel motivated. Learn more about building sustainable habits.
Yes! While morning exercise is ideal for boosting all-day energy, the most important thing is exercising at some point during the day. Lunchtime workouts are excellent for reinvigorating yourself when you start to fatigue after a busy morning. Choose a time and activity you'll consistently commit to—whether that's morning weightlifting, lunchtime yoga, or evening walks. Consistency matters more than timing.
